Why You Cannot Wrap an Alginate with wet paper towels anymore.....

Times have changed, our techniques and materials have all gotten better.....however......there are things that happen on a daily basis that can change certain results.....some not in a good way!

What Happens NOW When You Wrap an Alginate with Moist Paper Towels

The paper we use nowadays is recycled. When it gets wet or moist, it starts to break down, as it should do when it is flushed down the toilet, or put in a landfill!

However this creates a problem in dentistry today!

Turns out wrapping the alginate with wet towels causes particles to be released which absorb into the surface of the alginate. This will cause a weaker, flakier stone surface of the poured model and change the dimesional stability resulting in poorly fitting appliances.

Take the wet paper towel 'ball' it up and place it underneath the impression tray, so it is not in contact with the alginate impression material.

Place the moistened alginate impression in a sealed container (ziplock-bag/tupperware style container) and keep for the recommended storage time. This acts as a 'humidor' keeping the right humidity.

Use the right alginate, use the right impression tray, store correctly, disinfect, pour the stone carefully!
